Short answer: yes, you need a local licence localisation — your national licence and an IDP are not valid on their own. It is issued at the counter in Colombo airport arrivals, to the right of the currency exchange, open 24/7: about 5 minutes, 15,000 LKR, valid for your 30-day visa, and only the categories already open in your home licence get localised. For a car with a driver, no licence is needed at all.

Airport DMT counter vs AAC — compare the two legal routes
There are two legal routes. The airport counter is the fast one — about 5 minutes on your way out of arrivals; the AAC route is the only one that covers tuk-tuks.

"I have motorcycle category A"
Any bike in our fleet is available to you. Localise your licence at the airport counter — about 5 minutes and 15,000 LKR — and every category open in your home licence works here too.
"I only have category B (car)"
You cannot legally ride a scooter or bike over 50cc — there is no way for a tourist to "open" a motorcycle category locally. Your legal options: the Honda Dio 49cc from our fleet, which needs no motorcycle category; a tuk-tuk — we help arrange its permit on the island; or a car — self-drive after the localisation, or with our driver with no documents at all.
"I want a car — self-drive or with a driver?"
Self-drive: category B plus the airport localisation is enough — it covers cars. With a driver: nothing is needed — no licence, no IDP. That's why most of our guests take a car with driver from $45/day for long routes.
"I land at night"
The counter is open 24/7, so a night landing is no problem. We track your flight and meet you with a name sign even if it is delayed — for free — then walk you through the airport, help at the counter and answer questions on the way.
"I'm staying longer than a month"
The localisation is valid for your 30-day visa. Staying longer? Every model has a monthly rate (the Honda Dio 110 is $150/month, for example), for 2+ months we discuss a discount individually, and when you extend your visa we help renew the localisation.
What happens if you ride without the localisation
Fines and the risk of the bike being impounded — and after an accident every cost falls on you. One crash can cost more than a whole season of legal riding.
Licence questions, answered
Can I ride a scooter in Sri Lanka with a car licence?
No. Any scooter or bike over 50cc needs an open motorcycle category in your home licence, and a tourist cannot obtain one locally. With category B your legal options are the Honda Dio 49cc, a tuk-tuk or a car.
Is an international driving permit (IDP) enough on its own?
No. An IDP by itself is not valid in Sri Lanka — you still need the local localisation. The airport counter works from your national licence; for the AAC route check the current requirements at aacceylon.lk.
